Vansha (वंश) means lineage or family descent line in Nepali traced patrilineally through the father's side, from a founding ancestor down through sons. A woman is born into her father's vansha but is considered to marry into her husband's on marriage, so her children belong to his line, not hers which is why family trees are anchored on the male line with wives linked in as spouses rather than as separate branches. Vansha is closely tied to gotra (clan, used to check who you can't marry) and kul devta (shared family deity) and it carries real weight for inheritance, funeral rites and community/Samaj membership. Many Samaj organizations in Nepal are literally associations of people sharing a common vansha, so recording it accurately isn't just genealogy, it's proof of belonging.
